The first Czech hotel after the pandemic received the European and national eco-label

Visitors to the Czech capital can finally stay in an environmentally friendly hotel that has successfully passed the EU Ecolabel certification. The Best Western Hotel Moráň, located in Prague 2, has received this ecolabel.

The Czech Environmental Information Agency (CENIA) has certified the new holder of the EU Ecolabel and the Eco-friendly service label. Prague’s Best Western Hotel Moráň is the only hotel in Prague and only the second in the Czech Republic to be awarded the European Ecolabel.

“Providing sustainable accommodation services is one of the main priorities for our hotel and we wanted to have an unquestionable confirmation for our guests that we are not greenwashing in this respect. We are now the only hotel in Prague and the surrounding area to hold the EU Ecolabel and the Eco-friendly service label, which is a huge competitive advantage,” said hotel director Gabriela Prachařová, describing the reasons for applying for the Ecolabel.

As part of the certification process, CENIA verified that the hotel actually meets all the criteria associated with the certification. These include, for example, efficient water management, reduction of CO2 emissions, use of renewable energy sources and reduction of food waste. “The criteria for obtaining the eco-label are certainly nothing to worry about. They are set in such a way that approximately one fifth of companies in a given category can meet them. We do not want to make our eco-labels a narrow elite club. On the contrary, our goal is to motivate the widest possible spectrum of entrepreneurs to behave sustainably,” said Miroslav Havránek, Director of CENIA, a contributory organisation of the Ministry of the Environment. It is the guarantor of the eco-labelling system.

“We know from our experience that tourists from Western Europe in particular are looking for sustainable accommodation and the EU Ecolabel is very popular with them. For hotel marketing, this ecolabel is a huge plus. We therefore believe that over time the number of holders will grow and we will join countries such as Austria, France and Spain, which have dozens of certified accommodation facilities,” added Jan Herget, Director of CzechTourism.
