We are launching a project to support the solar potential of the Ústí nad Labem Region

Czech Environmental Information Agency has launched the Solar project (Solar potential of the Ústí nad Labem region: data basis for the development of future methodologies and frameworks in the energy sector). The project is based on the assumption that solar energy is a clean resource and the ideal way to use this energy in urbanised areas is to place photovoltaic panels on the roofs of buildings. Due to the fluctuations in the amount of energy generated in this way, it is necessary to know the potential amount of energy generated by each rooftop and the connection to other energy infrastructure in order to function properly within larger urban areas.

The aim of the Solar project is to create a data base that will enable more efficient achievement of energy self-sufficiency and help in the development of regulatory frameworks in the energy sector. The specific objectives are:

  • create a detailed map of solar potential taking into account year-to-year variations in meteorological conditions,
to identify the most suitable locations for the deployment of solar panels,
  • link this data with downstream infrastructure information,
  • create a web-based tool to allow viewing of the dataset.

The main outcome of the project will be a dataset containing a very accurate solar potential layer for the Ústí nad Labem region, which will be linked to the downstream energy infrastructure. The resulting solar maps will be presented on the Ústí nad Labem Region’s Portabo data portal and on the INSPIRE National Geoportal. It is expected that the next output will motivate the citizens of the Ústí nad Labem Region to invest in rooftop solar panels. This is expected to result in energy and fuel savings, subsequent local emission reductions, and ultimately a faster transformation and modernisation in the energy sector of the Ústí nad Labem Region.
