About Data Services

In the Czech Republic, there are about 40 different information systems operated within the environmental sector, including geographical information systems, as well as several thousand databases. Most of these resources are directly available to the broad public regardless of the usefulness of their content.

It becomes clear that it is necessary to provide for a comprehensive, integrated and readily accessible service, which will not only offer a comprehensible and comfortable access to specialised information but will also provide the users with direct professional information support in their own activities. The primary emphasis must not be placed on who is competent to gather some particular partial information, whether it is the Ministry of the Environment, its sector institutions or other state bodies participating in environmental protection. On the other hand, the authorship must remain unquestionable and a direct responsibility for the quality of the partial data must be maintained.

In order to solve the above described problem, it must be ensured that all relevant information is available from one location, that this information is described in detail and that a centre is set up to provide a professional information support in a centralised manner.

CENIA, Czech Environmental Information Agency, was established within the environmental sector as a central point for the provision of information on the state and the development of the environment in the Czech Republic. Data Services represent one of the main pillars ensuring that this basic objective is fulfilled.

The term Data Services is understood as follows:

  • collection and further processing of aggregated data from the environmental sector, as well as from the outside, as required by users
  • provision of direct professional information support in working with these data
