Foreign organizations for LA21

International organizations that support sustainable development, Local Agenda 21 or provide information about these topics on their websites:

Council of European Municipalities and Regions
CEMR (The Council of European Municipalities and Regions) is an organization founded on two fundamental principles:

  • The essence of democratic life in all countries is local democracy. The CEMR only unites local and regional authorities whose members are elected in free and general elections.
  • Because they are the layer of public administration closest to the people, they play an important role in the process of European integration.

European Environmental Bureau (EEB)
The EEB is a federative non-governmental organization working with the Council of Europe, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Economic and Social Committee of the European Union, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the International Committee for Sustainable Development.

Evropská unie
Among organizations and institutions promoting the principles of sustainable development and the MA 21 at the European level, the European Union stands above the rest. Its environmental policy fully incorporates the principles of sustainable development. Accordingly, the European Union emphasizes the necessity of considering environmental aspects in creating and implementing other policies. The European Union is an institution that underlines the importance of the active participation of its citizens in decision-making processes.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
The webpage of the sustainable development section of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The FAO is a key partner for implementation of three environmental conventions: The UN Convention on Biological Diversity, The UN Convention to Combat Deforestation and The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The website features a survey of environmental conventions and agreements.

Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI)
Local Governments for Sustainability (hereafter ICLEI) is an association of local authorities that is dedicated to the prevention and solution of local, regional and global problems through local activities and events. More than 450 towns, cities, regions and their associations from all over the world are members (more than 180 of them in Europe). The Czech Republic is represented by Krnov and Vsetín.

Organization for Economic co-operation and development (OECD)
An international organization that aims to assist governments in solving economic and social problems as well as governing problems in a globalizing world. The OECD consists of 30 member states (including the Czech Republic) that cooperate with other non-member countries, non-governmental organizations and the civic sector. The OECD compiles statistical overviews and addresses economic and social problems from the macroeconomic point of view. Furthermore, it also pays attention to trade, education, development, science and innovations.

Sustainable Development International
The organization cooperates with international groups including international agencies like the CSD, the INIDO, the UNEP, and the World Energy Council, as well as with investment and banking authorities and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives. Along with those organizations, it administers a database of the key members at the local, regional and national levels as well as a database of development agencies’ representatives, independent organizations and international workers.

Sustainable Development - the UK Government´s approach
An official sustainable development website that contains information about the steps taken to reach sustainable development based on the decision-making processes within the UK government and external processes. It also contains official government communications, news, details of key documents, a list of activities of various initiatives, events, interviews, publications and thousands of links to British and international organizations.

The Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD)
One of the most important organizations with worldwide activities that helps push through Agenda 21 at the local level is the United Nations Organization and its Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD). The Commission was set up in 1992. Its main task is to monitor the compliance with agreements signed at the Earth Summit in 1992. Compliance at the local, regional and national levels is monitored.

Trvalo udržatelný rozvoj v Slovenskej republike
The website is maintained by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central and Eastern Europe, REC Slovakia. It contains information about the Capacity 21 project – Information Campaign about Sustainable Development in Slovakia, about the National Strategy of Sustainable Development in Slovakia and other documents.

United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP)
The UNEP was founded in 1972 by the General Assembly of the UN pursuant to a recommendation of the first international conference on the environment that took place in Stockholm in 1972. The mission of the UNEP is to encourage and coordinate activities protecting the environment, particularly at the international level and to provide underlying data for environmentally friendly decision-making. The UNEP was one of the most important organizations that worked on the implementation of the decisions from the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, particularly Agenda 21 and international agreements.

World Federation of United Cities (WFUC)
The World Federation of United Cities unites more than 1400 representatives of municipalities. It deals with multidisciplinary topics, geography etc.

World Watch institute
The Worldwatch Institute, a non-governmental non-profit research organization headquartered in Washington, conducts interdisciplinary research on key environmental, social and economic trends. It is divided into 4 sections: energy, economy, nature and society. Its activities focus on the transformation into an environmentally and socially sustainable society. The institute also publishes books and a journal. Some of it publications are available on its website.
